I wasn't sore after the first few days and I never felt like I couldn't try for a wave because my arms were too tired. Swimming helps for general upper body endurance but it does not use the same muscles - especially the back muscles to keep your chest up off the board. Without question, my paddle strength was 1,000% better than it had been in the past which was noted by my surf instructor in Costa Rica.
